Motor Claims
If you are making a claim as a result of a motor vehicular collision, fire or theft, these are the steps you should take.
- Immediately notify the police/fire authorities. Even if there is no damage/injury to third parties or their property.
- If there is third party damage/injury take note of names and contact information, if possible. Photographs of the damage are also helpful, particularly with breakage of glass claims. Do NOT admit liability or make any payments or promises to pay without Insurer’s consent.
- As soon as possible, notify your Insurer, Agent or Broker. This can be via telephone, email, text etc. A claim form must be completed and submitted with copies of your license/permit and estimate of repairs/survey report. The Insurer may request additional documents such as police report, fire report, third party proof of ownership, third party claim form, driver’s statement etc.
- Secure your vehicle from further damage and seek approval from Insurers before commencing repairs or disposing of damaged parts.
- In some cases where approval is granted for repairs, you may be asked to produce receipts/invoices as proof of expenses.
Fire/Property Claims
- Immediately notify the police/fire authorities. Even if there is no damage/injury to third parties or their property.
- As soon as possible, notify your Insurer, Agent or Broker. This can be via telephone, email, text etc. A claim form must be completed and submitted with proof of loss, i.e. estimates, photographs, video footage, police or fire reports etc.
- Secure your property from further damage i.e. with the consent of Insurers you may effect temporary repairs and clean up. Ensure to obtain approval from Insurers before disposing of damaged items.
- Provide the necessary assistance to Insurers in cases where further investigations are warranted and make damaged items available for inspection.
Marine Claims
- Immediately notify the Marine Police if the incident occurred at sea. If the incident occurred while docked or on land you should notify the Police or Fire Department, if fire related.
- As soon as possible notify your Insurer, Agent of Broker. This can be via telephone, email, text etc. A claim form must be completed and submitted with proof of loss, i.e. estimates/marine surveyor report, photographs, police or fire reports, third party claim form (if necessary) etc. If a third party is a making a claim against you, do NOT admit liability or make any payments or promises to pay without Insurer’s consent
- In some cases where approval is granted for repairs, you may be asked to produce invoices/receipts as proof of expenses.
Liability Claims
Public/Product Liability – If a third party or their representative is making a claim against you as a result of loss or injury or death which occurred on your premises,
or resulting from the consumption/use of a product manufactured or sold by you; these are the steps you should take.
- Depending on the severity of the injury you should immediately notify the Emergency Services, i.e. Ambulance/Medical Personnel. Do NOT admit liability or make any payments or promises to pay without Insurer’s consent.
- As soon as possible, notify your Insurer, Agent or Broker. This can be via telephone, email or text etc. A completed claim form must be submitted along with statements, third party claim forms, medical reports, lab/test results, photographs, video footage, if available.
- You are only liable to a third party if their injury or loss resulted from your negligence, therefore it is imperative that you cooperate with any investigation the Insurer may conduct to determine liability.
Employer’s Liability
If an employee or their representative is making a claim against you as a result of injury or loss or death which occurred during the course of their employment; these are the steps you should take.
- Depending on the severity of the injury you should immediately notify the emergency services, i.e. Ambulance/Medical Personnel. Do NOT admit liability or make any payments or promises to pay without Insurer’s consent.
- If the employee has incurred medical expenses then the first point of contact should be the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) which offers an employment injury benefit up to ECS20,000.00. You should also notify your EL Insurer, Agent or Broker in the event that the medical expenses exceed the NIC threshold, or you are sued for damages. The initial notification can be via telephone, email or text etc. A completed claim form must be submitted along with statements, medical reports, proof of employee’s wages, photographs, video footage etc.
- You are only liable to an employee if their injury or loss resulted from your negligence, therefore it is imperative that you cooperate with any investigation the Insurer may conduct to determine liability.
